Preferred Lies
Preferred Lies, allows players to lift, clean, and replace their ball in the general area of the course (fairway, etc.) for free relief to ensure fair play in adverse weather and course conditions. Players must first mark their ball's position before lifting it, then place it within a specific distance (e.g., 6 inches or one club-length) of its original spot, but not nearer the hole.
How to use Preferred Lies
- Check the Local Rules: Before playing, check the local rules to see if Preferred Lies is in effect and to determine the specific distance for relief.
- Mark Your Ball: Mark the exact spot where your ball lies before you lift it.
- Lift and Clean: Lift your ball and clean it to remove any mud, grass, or dirt.
- Place Your Ball: Place the ball on a spot that is not nearer the hole than the original spot. The distance for placement, such as 6 inches or one club length, will be specified by the club's local rules.
- Resume Play: Play your next shot from the new position.
