Running along the top of the cliffs, with panoramic views over St. Austell Bay, “Carlyon” is an extremely welcoming opening hole.

From an elevated tee, the fairway is wide and favours a drive to the left to give you the best line into the green. However, a wayward shot to the right will place you in the waiting bunker just off the fairway or at worst, over the cliff-top and out of bounds.

The approach shot to the pin is potentially a blind one and can prove to be very deceiving. Accuracy is of utmost on this shot due to the long and narrow nature of the green and the two greenside bunkers awaiting those wayward shots. The first is placed on front right hand side of the green, and the other mid-way up the left hand side of the green. Therefore, a shrewd club selection is vital in order to ensure the successful completion of this hole.

This is one of the most challenging holes on the Golf Course. “Tregrehan” is an early test in your round.

With the cliff threatening from the right and a fairway bunker defending the left, any tee shot must be wholly straight and accurate at the marker post. The second shot is a blind one taking you over an incline with the remaining fairway out of sight. It’s necessary to club down with your 2nd shot as the ground falls away to a long green which slants from front to back. Protecting both sides of the green are two deep bunkers, awaiting any wayward shots.

A good miss to this green would be on the left, to avoid flirting with the cliff edge.

“Shorthorn” is a picturesque, yet taxing, short hole.

The very narrow opening to the green is guarded by strategically placed bunkers nestling at the front. This makes what would otherwise be a straightforward hole a tricky one to judge.

Playing back up the hill it plays longer than its yardage so club selection is key. Once on the green, the huge undulations offer no remorse.

The relatively short par 5 “Main Line” can be reached in two by the longer hitters.  However, the hole is not as easy as it might first appear with mine shafts hugging both left and right edges of the fairway to catch errant tee shots.

As you get closer to the green the train line comes into view with the fairway falling away to the left as the hole narrows. Therefore a shot favouring the right half of the fairway is safer but this will leave a more challenging angle for the approach.  

A long narrow green awaits with undulating slopes predominately running form right to left, with the railway line lurking some ten to fifteen yards to the left to punish wayward approaches. The main difficulty of this hole is the green itself with its abundant contours and deceptive undulations.

Polmear along with all the par 3’s is a demanding hole requiring a precise iron shot to find the putting surface. Playing downhill from the back tees it plays a club shorter than its yardage.

With out of bounds lurking left of the stone wall, one could be forgiven for bailing out right but bunkers lay in wait guarding the front right section of the green. Further bunkers and slopes protect the left of the green leaving a very difficult up and down.

There’s simply one place to be on the hole and that’s the green.

Polgavor is a beautifully scenic hole played along the cliff edge with a generous fairway flanked by 2 small bunkers on either side.

The left hand side of the fairway is the safer side but will leave a longer shot to a tricky undulating green that is potentially blind. Playing considerably uphill club selection is key, a false front will catch any shot falling short and fall back off the front left of the green.

The right half of the green is the ideal line and which will feed the ball towards the centre of the green. Any shot left or long will disappear down steep banks leaving a treacherous chip shot back up to the raised green above.

A wayward shot some 15 yards so the right will disappear down the cliff edge on to Crinnis beach and out of bounds.

"Cally Varder" is an attractive short par 4 with a fairway which contours from right to left.

The right edge of the fairway is the desired line from the tee to keep the ball on the fairway. For the longer hitters fir trees on the left and a dense copse of trees on the right ask a question of which club to hit from the tee, is the risk of driver worth the reward?

A short yet challenging second shot awaits with a green which falls away relentlessly to the back left corner. A shot to the front right section of the green is the ideal target with the contours of the green the ball will gather towards the centre of the putting surface.

A complex par 4 that requires a precise tee shot. Any shot straying to the right will be gathered up by the trees or finish blocked out behind them.

The left half of the fairway is the line to strive for. The approach shot is played over a swale with two concealed bunkers lying in wait.

The green itself stretches 40 yards in length over 2 tiers so club selection can vary 2/3 clubs depending on the pin location. If in doubt hit an extra club.

Not a long hole in yardage but a demanding one still. Club selection is important to make sure you lay up short of the old quarry which is a hazard on this hole at 260 yards from the tee.

The line to take from the tee is the left edge of the fairway which is in line with the historic Polkerris Harbour in the distance to allow for the steep slope which will push the ball down the hill.

An accurate iron shot is required over the quarry to find the green. With trouble lurking anywhere right a sheer bank awaits with heavy rough lurking for any shot leaked in that direction.

Par is always a welcome score on this hole to finish the front 9.

This short par 5 “Bream Rocks” gives you the chance to kick start your back 9. A very picturesque hole running along the cliff edge and down towards the beach located beside the green.

The tee shot is played downhill to a fairway guarded by trees to the left and threatened by the cliff edge to the right.  The landing area is spacious but your drive needs to be positioned strategically on the left side of the fairway to compensate for the left to right gradient.

If the fairway is missed to the right a decision must be made if to play to the left or risk the carry over the deep inlet laying in wait for a mishit shot. The green itself is long and narrow with bunkers front left and on the right hand side for any shot straying even slightly offline.

A short but extremely challenging hole awaits you on the 11th.

A very narrow green is never easy to find and is surrounded by trouble on all sides. Bunkers heavily guard the left hand side and also a front right bunker will catch any weak shot to the right.

Harsh slopes on the right edge of the green means there’s only one place to put your tee shot and that’s on the putting surface.

Playing back up the steepest hill on the course this hole plays well beyond it’s short yardage.

A fairway with a left to right camber pulls the ball to the right hand rough. A tee shot favouring the left hand side which avoids the copse of trees is favourable and will leave a flatter stance for the second shot.

A double tiered green awaits with bunkers both short left and right so taking a club that carry’s to at least the middle of the green is advised.

The complexity of this hole lies initially with the gradient of the fairway. The line of the fairway bunkers in the distance is a good line to take and the ball will be drawn back towards the centre of the fairway by the contours. Any ball landing right of the fairway has little chance of staying in play.

Managing your ball up the left hand side for the remainder of this hole is key before hitting your approach to the green.

By far the longest green on the course, it stretches some 49 yards. The first third of the green slopes viciously to the right before the remodelled back section of the green flattens out. Taking a club to carry past the front section and favouring the left half is the optimum target. Any shot landing right of the green runs the risk of going out of bounds.

After a short walk from the 13th green taking you to the other side of train line, the shortest Par 4 on the course awaits.

A drive favouring the left of centre is the perfect target from the tee, as with the previous two holes the fairway slopes significantly from left to right.

A short pitch remains to a green heavily guarded by bunkers. The sensible shot is to the left side of the green where a steep slope will gather the ball back towards the centre.

Any shot to the right will fall down the slopes into the hollows or the sand below.

“Fir Copse” is the most taxing of the par 5’s on the course where distance and accuracy are of equal significance.

The tee shot itself pinches in at driving distance with a stone wall and hedge to the left which must be avoided at all costs. From a good tee shot the second should be positioned to the left centre of the fairway to allow for the camber of the fairway. Any shot finishing too far right will find their next shot obstructed by trees in their line to the green.

As you approach the green the out of bounds lies close to the left so be cautious not to stray too far.

One of the most testing driving holes on the course, accuracy is of vital importance.

A successful drive down the tree-lined fairway will leave a short to mid-iron approach to the two tier green. The tier splits the green in to a right and left section, any shot landing on the centre line of the green will follow the steep contours to the bottom level.

Ensuring you’re on the correct level is of the upmost importance otherwise a treacherous 2 putt awaits.

A challenging tee shot awaits on the 17th with trees guarding the left edge of the fairway and out of bounds lurking to the right. Finding this fairway is of vital importance to be able to attack this green in two.

The second shot is to a green well protected by bunkers short right and long left. Distance control needs to be precise to find the putting surface.

The safe shot is to the front left and take your chances two putting from distance.

A tough Par 3 stands between you and the finish.

Playing slightly down hill this hole plays under its full yardage. With bunkers, bushes and out of bounds right of this green; the left hand side is certainly the side to favour. The contours of the surrounds and green itself will gather the ball towards the centre of the green.
